About the Project

Our group in front of The Strand

Cobb County and the City of Marietta contain a wealth of historical sites simply waiting to be rediscovered. We chose to further investigate the recently saved Strand Theatre for our community-based research project at Kennesaw Mountain. Although the general history of the theatre is well documented, much of the community's emotional and psychological attachments have remained undocumented. Through oral histories we attempted to capture the essence of the Strand and why the community loves the theatre so much. We discovered that every citizen has his or her own story to tell about the theatre, and all expressed different reasons for saving the landmark theatre. Some remember the sticky floors, their favorite pictures shows, or their first date at the Strand, and all agree that the theatre remains the most important unprotected historical landmark in Cobb County. Whether the theatre brings back fond memories of Sunday afternoons in the theatre or if remains a mysterious edifice of a bygone era, all rejoice because "the Strand is Saved!”
